In Pursuit of Happiness.

Hmm, think it's time to resurrect my blog, it's been a little while.

This picture is part of the Brighton series and was featured on the Flak website, (thanks Andy!).

I'm pretty fond of it and it'll be part of my exhibition for the Salisbury Arts Trail in October, but more about that later.
For those interested, it was taken on a Nikon D90 using a Sigma 30mm lens and window light.
Big thanks to my friends for being comfortable enough to take their clothes off :)

Pretty damn pleased to be part of The Guernsey Photography Festival as part of the exhibition of and by Tim Andrews.
He sent me a video of the show and it looks really amazing...there must be thirty or so images of him all framed and suspended from the ceiling...super impressive.

Everytime I saw Grace wearing this top I wanted to take some pictures and eventually I managed to pin her down for 3 minutes.
The Astia is perfect, more than perfect, I don't know why I ever use anything else....apparently it's discontinued now so I'm madly searching the internet for supplies.

Inspired by crush on La Roux we had fun messing around with hair and make up.
The clothes Gracie's wearing belonged to her grandmother and to her great-grandmother ...still just as beautiful.

so a few days ago i put up a picture on flickr because my daughter said she liked it and asked why i hadn't posted it before.
anyway, people liked it and said so which is always nice but i realised i felt uncomfortable with it, that it didn't represent what i'm about anymore, and that was why i'd been reluctant to put it up when only a few months ago i was posting similar.

with portraits, i don't want fancy clothes or makeup (unless that's what you wear anyway) or 'trying to be sexy pouts' or toes pointing inwards or exaggerated colours or fancy textures , i just want you, as you are, in a good light, just being you, i'd like to take everything away so we're just left with the bones so we can actually see and recognize and connect with who's there.
i want a slight feeling of being unsettled because we feel that we've seen ourselves in someone else.
and i'm aware i have a long long way to go.

and this is maisie again, just being maisie.

I'm submitting three pictures for the Wiltshire Open Exhibition today.
I struggled with which ones to choose but in the end went for three sea/beach scenes, thinking slightly more commercial than arty but they actually look really nice and will go on the wall when I get them back.

I'm feeling alot more relaxed about photography at the moment, I'm not putting myself under some false pressure anymore where I feel I have to understand where I'm going and achieve something, but instead I'm taking my time and appreciating whatever I can manage to do.

And hoping you're all having a lovely summer!

When I'm looking in my mirror at home, I don't think I'm so bad.

Whichever way you look and whoever's doing the looking, you couldn't call me ugly.
Not handsome, maybe, but not ugly.
My face is sort of square and what an author might call open, and it's a good colour.
The scar over my left eye where I argued with the railing doesn't help, though I wonder sometimes if it doesn't make me look a bit tougher. I don't know.
And there's always my hair. No two ways about that, I've got a head of hair that any man would be proud of, thick and dark with a natural wave that needs only a touch of the fingers after it's combed and glossy without a lot of cream. No doubt about my hair. And I have it cut every fortnight and never miss. Or only now and again.
I could do with a couple more inches on my height. I've always had a yen for just two more inches.

And then my clothes. Now there's no denying I know how to dress. I don't pay the earth for my suits but I know where they give you the right cut and I always keep my pants pressed and my shoes clean.

So there I am, Victor Arthur Brown.
Take me or leave me, I'm all I've got.
